SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.
Place the motorcycle on its center stand and secure it. Jack up the front of the motorcycle so that the front wheel is off the ground and the rear wheel is resting on the ground.
Remove the two (each caliper) brake caliper mounting bolts with a 14 mm socket.
Slide the brake calipers back and off of the discs. Do not touch the brake lever after the calipers have been removed from the discs. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
Remove the cotter pin from the axle nut.
Remove the front axle nut with a 19 mm socket.
Hold the pinch bolt with a 12 mm wrench and loosen the nut with a 12 mm socket. Remove the front axle.
Free the speedometer drive from the left side of the hub. Inspect the speedometer for wear and damage.
Remove the collar from the right side of the hub.
Remove the wheel from the front forks.
Inspect the front wheel. See the Wheel Inspection topics for more information.
Make sure the brake discs are free of oil and grease. Place the wheel between the fork legs.
Place the collar in the right side of the wheel.
Apply grease to speedometer drive cavity and fit the speedometer drive into the left side of the hub. Make sure the tabs on the drive fit into the cavity correctly.
Apply a light coat of grease to the front axle and insert it from the left side.
Thread on the axle nut.
Install the two (each caliper) caliper mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to specification with a 14 mm socket.

hold the front axle bolt with a 19 mm socket. Torque the nut to specification with a 19 mm socket.

Remove the stand or jack and set the front wheel on the ground. Hold the front brake, and pump the front end several times to seat the axle. If the front brake will not pump up, the brakes will have to be bled. See the Brake Bleeding topic for more information.
Hold the axle pinch bolt with a 12 mm wrench and tighten the pinch nut to specification.
